District officials said the first early release day on Sept. 19 gave teachers a chance to learn from each other. It was the first early release day, and four more are planned for the 2016-17 school year, officials said.
Throughout Hendrick Hudson district schools, teachers and other professionals gathered in classrooms, auditoriums and conference rooms to share ideas and make curriculum plans. Teachers, teaching assistants, specialists and therapists all gathered to exchange information and offer support.
“We become highly invested when a colleague who teaches the same subject can share a successful approach," said Margaret Ruller, executive director of curriculum and instruction for the district. "There is something uniquely valuable about learning from someone who walks in your shoes.”
Ruller said some of the time was used to look at student work and use it to help guage student understanding of what's been taught.
According to Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School teacher Jennifer LeFevre, the day was was productive and helpful.
“Being together gave us all the opportunity to have an over-arching commonality, with time to discuss both what's working and how we are addressing things that could use improvement," she said.
